That's all, folks! At least all the quotes from this past summer, that is. I think I'll keep this blog for myself as a kind of ongoing scrapbook of my archaeological experiences, and I'm sure that come this winter I'll have more material about what serious archaeologists do and how, which I will type up if my fingers don't freeze and snap off in what I can only imagine will be a seriously cold December in New Mexico.

Her hair was like a rope what's woven from the raven's wing
It flowed like river water from her brow
Her eyes were two brown stones that twinkle underneath the water
Her voice moved as quickly as the Hondo...
He saw her and he longed for her, a flower in the desert
His name was gold and silver to the town
To this day who can say if love was written on her heart
All we know is that the flower got cut down.

Serious Archaeologists do anything to preserve the wood.
(This one comes from Sev saying "do anything to preserve the wood!" as we extracted a beam from a post hole, which made this very Unserious Archaeologist giggle. Though not as much as when a visitor to the site later asked the hilarious question, "Did you get all that wood out of that hole?" ...Yes. Yes we did.)

Once, I lived by the river
I wake up to your simple song with each new morning
You sing me sleepward when the nighttime pulls me down...
I miss you, Hondo
So come and wrap your watery arms around me, river
And I'll forget that I ever loved another
You call me sweeter, hold me tighter, pull me under
And I miss your ice embrace within the desert
You're always changing
in the same soothing formations
Someday steps will follow words and I'll return.

"Oh, won't you meet me where the crazy horse catches your eye
where you can't fit any more dirt on me or more stars in the sky
my heart is full of joy sure as my feet are full of spines
for three short sweet weeks when the old mill I called mine"
--from "Meet Me At The Mill," an original song by a Serious Archaeologist [in training].
